You don't need to be fit to get fit

I’ve heard it a few times this week.

‘I’m going to start boxing training soon, but I just need to get fit first.’

I’m sorry to have to break the harsh news, but it’s your unfit self you have to bring to the gym to get it fit. And actually there’s no better way than to do it in a group. You need accountability, consistency and company to make it fun and effective.

The trouble with the secret fitness plan, the one that you have set aside for the dead of night or the early morning when no one can see you struggle, is that it remains a plan. You can put it off until tomorrow because no one is expecting you.

When you join a group you realise that everyone is struggling on some level. Even the fittest people are pushing themselves. That’s what it’s all about. A group will keep you honest, will give you a sense of perspective, a bit of friendly competition and even support. You can all moan and groan together when you’re ploughing through those burpees. You can high five each other when you’re finished.

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and you’ll soon realise that when you join a group. We’re all human. The road to fitness isn’t easy, especially when you set out. But we’ve all been there and we all understand that you feel self-conscious, inadequate and a little bit exhausted. That’s normal, that’s the way it is. But it will become less exhausting and painful as your fitness improves.
